Ferragosto, a First for Us
On the 15th of August, most of Italy simply stops.
Shops pull their shutters down, cities empty out, and entire towns relocate to the coast or back to the village everyone's family actually comes from. It's the one date in the Italian calendar that isn't really about a single dish or a single table — it's about everybody leaving at once, and for once, nobody arguing about it.
Ferragosto traces back to the Roman Feriae Augusti — a rest period declared in the name of the emperor Augustus, timed to fall after the summer harvest. Centuries later it folded into the religious calendar as the Feast of the Assumption, and today it's mostly known simply as the day — and the surrounding week or two — when Italy takes its collective holiday. Beach towns fill up, mountain villages fill up, and the cities left behind go quiet enough to hear your own footsteps. Meals get longer, lighter, and almost always shared outdoors: grilled things, cold things, whatever's in season, eaten slowly because there's genuinely nowhere else to be.
This August 15th, we'll be heading to Ferragosto in Five Dock for the very first time.
For us, it feels like a natural place to be. Ferragosto has long been one of Sydney's most loved celebrations of Italian culture, bringing together thousands of people to share in the food, traditions and community that make Italian life so special.
We'll be there across the day with the Bippi family, sharing the products inspired by Nonna Emilia's recipes, chatting with fellow food lovers and celebrating the traditions that continue to shape everything we do. Whether you've been cooking with Bippi for years or you're discovering us for the very first time, we'd love to meet you, hear your stories and welcome you to our table.
We'll have our range available to explore, plenty of authentic Italian flavour to discover and, most importantly, the chance to connect with the people behind Bippi.
